A SASSA office near you will be able to assist you in applying in person. If you want to apply for SASSA but are too sick, old, or disabled to go to the SASSA office yourself, you may have your procurator (family member or friend) do so on your behalf. Your letter of authorization should be brought with them.

It is necessary to complete the application form in the presence of a SASSA officer at the SASSA office. The SASSA officer can assist you or your appointed person in completing the application form if you are unable to do so yourself.

How to Apply For a SASSA Grant Online

SASSA has several grant programs, including Care Dependency Grants, Child Support Grants, Foster Child Grants, Disability Grants, Older Persons Grants, and Grants-In-Aid. Before applying, please take note of the following:

• Your cell phone will be used to verify your account, and you will receive notifications from SASSA through your email address.
• It is possible to have someone you trust apply on your behalf if you are unable to do so yourself (because of sickness, old age, or illiteracy). This person is called a Procurator.
• In order to manage all the grants you manage under your SASSA Services account, you will only need 1 SASSA Services account if you are a Procurator who assists many people with their SASSA grant applications.

Steps To Apply For A SASSA Grant Online

Online SASSA grant applications can be made by following these steps:
1) Access the SASSA website using any internet-connected device (phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer).

2) Click on the yellow “Register” button on the SASSA services website to register as a new user. The following personal information will be required from you:

• Whether you are a South African citizen, a permanent resident, or a refugee
• Your ID number
• Type of ID document (ID document/temporary ID)
• Verify your ID number
• Name (Mr./Mrs./Miss)
• Your surname
• Your full name
• Email address
• You must choose a password that contains at least 8 characters, including uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols, or special characters (not a common word or name)
• Choose a password and confirm it
• The number of your South African cellphone (starting with 0)

3) Purchase your One-Time-Pin by clicking the button and receiving your OTP via your cellphone number. You will now need to enter the OTP to confirm your registration.

4) Use your SASSA username and password to log in to the SASSA services website.

5) Select the type of grant you wish to apply for under “Apply for a Grant”.

6) Complete the grant application form with all the required information.

7) Make sure the SASSA-generated affidavit is signed by a commissioner of oaths and has it certified. The affidavit and Bank Payment Form should be printed, signed, and submitted together.

8) Include the following PDF documents as supporting documentation:

Child Support Grant applicants:

• A copy of the applicant’s ID
• If applicable, a copy of the spouse’s ID document
• Marriage certificate (if applicable) as proof of marital status
• Proof of banking details: a letter from the bank containing the applicant’s banking information and name
• Income proof (if applicable)
• Affidavit generated by SASSA

Foster Child Grant applicants:

• A copy of the applicant’s ID
• Please attach a copy of your spouse’s ID (if applicable)
• Marriage certificate (if applicable) as proof of marital status
• The applicant’s bank details and name should be included in a letter from the bank
• Income proof (if applicable)
• Affidavit generated by SASSA

Older Persons Grant applicants:

• A copy of the applicant’s ID
• If applicable, a copy of the spouse’s ID document
• Marriage certificate (if applicable) as proof of marital status

How Long To Process Your Grant Application?

Your grant application may take up to 3 months to be processed by SASSA.

The date you submitted your grant application will be the date you receive payment if your grant is approved. 

How Will You Know If Your Grant Application Was Successful?

You will receive written notification from SASSA if your grant application has not been approved.

After receiving notification that your application has been rejected, you can appeal the decision within 90 days. At the national office of the Department of Social Development, you must submit your appeal to the Minister of Social Development.
